How the calculation works

Finished size equals stitches × threads per stitch ÷ fabric count. Add your margin to both sides to get the fabric cut size.

Try an example

A 140 × 112 stitch pattern on 14-count Aida finishes at 10 × 8 inches.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the chart width and height in stitches, then the fabric count printed on your fabric.
  2. Choose the fabric threads each stitch spans: over 1 for Aida, or the setting specified by your linen or evenweave pattern. Enter an extra fabric margin for each side in inches.
  3. Select Calculate dimensions. Use Finished design for the stitched area and Fabric to cut for your fabric purchase; both show inches and centimetres.

Common questions

What does 14-count fabric mean?

On 14-count Aida, 14 stitches over one square fill one inch. A 140-stitch-wide pattern therefore finishes 10 inches wide. Increasing the fabric count makes the same pattern smaller.

Does stitch over mean the number of floss strands?

No. It means how many fabric threads each stitch spans. Stitching over two on 28-count evenweave gives the same finished size as over one on 14-count Aida. The number of floss strands in your needle does not change this calculation.

Is the extra fabric added on every side?

Yes. A 3-inch margin adds 6 inches to the finished width and 6 inches to the finished height. A 10 × 8 inch design therefore needs a 16 × 14 inch cut. Choose a margin that suits your finishing method.
